01 - UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Hams Hall BESS

Client - BW ESS

Location - Birmingham, England

Connection - 400kV

Capacity - 350MW / 1.2GWh

Energisation - Q3 2026

 

Hams Hall BESS is a 1.2GWh battery energy storage facility designed to provide large scale grid stability and flexibility within the transmission network. Connected at 400kV, it features a client substation with two 220MVA three-winding supergrid transformers and two interconnected 33kV switchboards for greater resilience which connect 248x Sungrow Power Titan 2.0 units. Upon completion, it will be among the largest operational BESS assets in Europe.

 

Energy-io are the lead designers and architects of this flagship BW ESS project, our team has worked closely with the client to take their concept and provide an end to end detailed design and delivery that starts with the design and build of a 400kV User Bay within the National Grid Hams Hall 400kV Substation which connects the client substation via an 800m 400kV cable system.

 

Key to the project is the close working relationship with Sungrow, through early technical collaboration and direct engineering interface we act as system integrator between the OEM and the grid, aligning compliance and commissioning through to energisation.

Berkswell BESS

Energisation - Q3 2027

 

Berkswell BESS is BW ESS' second UK Transmission connected project. Connected at 275kV, it will feature the very latest Sungrow Power Titan 3.0 BESS technology with an incredible 7144kWh in each 20 foot container, providing an impressive MWh per m2 within the site footprint. 

 

Energy-io are proud to continue our working relationship with BW ESS and Sungrow, again delivering end to end design and delivery for the project the same as Hams Hall BESS.

Arecleoch

03 - UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Arecleoch Wind Farm Extension

 

Client - ScottishPower Renewables

Location - South Ayrshire, Scotland

Connection - 33kV Transmission Connected

Capacity - 73MW

Technology - 13x Nordex N149 Turbines

Energisation - Late 2026

 

Arecleoch Wind Fram Extension is a new thirteen turbine development currently under construction for ScottishPower Renewables, scheduled for energisation in late 2026. The project will feature Nordex N149 turbines and connect via a new 132/33kV AIS substation being constructed by SP Energy Networks.

 

Energy-io is delivering the electrical balance of plant works across the site, including 33kV infrastructure, substation integration and grid compliance coordination. As with previous SPR projects, our scope consolidates engineering, installation and commissioning leadership to ensure seamless integration between turbine systems, balance of plant assets and the transmission connected network.

06 - OPERATIONAL

Camilla Farm BESS

Technology - BYD Cube

Energisation - December 2023

 

Camilla is a 50MW battery energy storage facility, connected at 33kV to the SPEN distribution network and delivered on behalf of Eelpower & Next Energy Capital. The asset supports regional grid flexibility and renewable energy integration within the distribution network.

 

Energy-io was engaged during the latter stages of the project to assume full electrical responsibility, refine the existing design and deliver the full electrical balance of plant works under an accelerated programme. By consolidating engineering, procurement, installation and grid interface coordination within a single delivery team, the 33kV connection and commissioning activities were brought back into alignment, enabling successful energisation in December 2023.

07 - OPERATIONAL

Hagshaw Hill Wind Farm

 

Client - ScottishPower Renewables

Location - South Lanarkshire, Scotland

Connection - 33kV Transmission Connection

Capacity - 78MW

Technology - 14x Nordex N149 Turbines

Energisation - April 2025

 

Hagshaw Hill is a 78MW onshore wind development delivered on behalf of ScottishPower Renewables. The project comprises fourteen 5.6MW Nordex N149 turbines, connected at 33kV via two new SPEN Transmission substations that sit within the customer control building. 

 

Energy-io provided integrated electrical balance of plant delivery, including 33kV infrastructure, substation integration and grid compliance coordination. Working in direct engineering alignment with the turbine manufacturer and network stakeholders, we ensured seamless integration between turbine systems, balance of plant assets and the wider grid through to successful operation.

Hagshaw Hill 33kV Substation Commissioning Support 

 

Client - SP Energy Networks

Infrastructure - 2x Indoor 33kV Substations

Scope - Commissioning, Protection & Witness Testing

 

Energy-io was engaged by SP Energy Networks to provide commissioning and testing support across two new indoor 33kV substations. The scope included commissioning and witness testing of the 33kV switchgear panels, protection schemes, battery systems, interface signalling and communications integration.

 

Working within an accelerated timeframe, Energy-io undertook all commssioning and witness testing activities to align the substations with connection milestones. Leveraging extensive experience within SPEN network environments, we ensured coordinated integration between grid infrastructure and developer assets, supporting successful energisation.
